Cape Verde’s Vozinha ready for ‘big club’ test at Colo Colo

SANTIAGO, Chile — Vozinha, the 40-year-old goalkeeper, has made a significant leap in his career after a standout FIFA World Cup performance with Cape Verde. After spending many years at smaller clubs, including a stint at Chaves in Portugal’s second tier, he is ready for the challenges ahead.

A New Chapter at Colo Colo

On Tuesday, Vozinha was officially unveiled by Colo Colo, the most successful club in Chile. He expressed his belief in deserving a place at a “big club,” stating, “The decision was very clear… deep down I always told myself I was a ‘big club’ player.”

Although the club announced his signing in late July, Vozinha mentioned that there were delays in his arrival. Despite receiving multiple offers, he always prioritized Colo Colo. “From day one, I knew where I wanted to play,” he said.

One of the challenges Vozinha faced was the Chilean football regulation requiring players to display their legal surnames on jerseys. He found the idea of dropping his nickname, which means “granny” in Portuguese, frustrating but welcomed the federation’s decision to grant an exception.

Fans Welcome the New Signing

Upon arriving at Santiago Airport, Vozinha received an enthusiastic welcome from fans waving flags and beating drums. He successfully passed his medical exam and signed the contract on Monday, joining his teammates for training soon after. His debut is anticipated this Sunday against Unión La Calera, as Colo Colo currently leads the league.

Reflecting on his World Cup experience, Vozinha remarked, “The World Cup was the best thing that ever happened to me in football… being here representing Colo Colo — a massive club with a rich history — is the highlight of my club career.” His brilliant performances against nations like Spain and Argentina catapulted him to fame, significantly boosting his social media following.

Now, as he looks to translate that momentum into success with Colo Colo, Vozinha remains focused: “Playing in the World Cup comes with immense pressure… I just want to work hard and help this team achieve its goals.”
