USSF president: Pochettino new deal talks ‘going well,’ announcement coming soon

United States Soccer Federation (USSF) president Cindy Parlow Cone indicated that discussions with Mauricio Pochettino regarding a contract extension as the U.S. men’s national team manager are progressing smoothly. She hinted at an announcement in the near future.

Pochettino joined U.S. Soccer in 2024 on a two-year deal, which is set to expire after the FIFA World Cup 2026. He took over the role from former manager Gregg Berhalter.

“As we have mentioned, the discussions with Mauricio and his staff are going well,” Parlow Cone stated during an appearance on Apple TV. “We anticipate having something to announce soon.”

Pochettino’s Performance

Under Pochettino’s guidance, the U.S. men’s national team had a notable performance in the 2026 World Cup. The team topped Group D, securing victories against Australia and Paraguay, and advanced past Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32. However, the U.S. faced a setback in the round of 16, losing 4-1 to Belgium.

Sources have indicated that the USSF aims to retain Pochettino for another four-year cycle, which would keep him at the helm through the 2030 World Cup, to be held in Spain, Portugal, and Morocco.

Contract Extension Discussions

Pochettino spoke on Spanish radio Cadena Cope on July 16, confirming that he and his coaching staff are reviewing the federation’s proposal. He mentioned that they are weighing their options before making a decision. “We are evaluating it, looking at it,” he stated. “[U.S. Soccer] has made me an offer to continue, and we will see. Next week, we will make a decision.”

Conversations about a possible extension date back to May when Pochettino discussed the federation’s project for the next four years with USSF CEO JT Batson. “We expressed our openness to listen to their plans,” Pochettino added.

In the meantime, the U.S. men’s national team is scheduled to return to action with friendly matches during the upcoming September FIFA international window.
