Thomas Tuchel: England weighing man-marking plan for Lionel Messi

ATLANTA — England coach Thomas Tuchel has revealed that he is contemplating a man-marking strategy for Lionel Messi ahead of Wednesday’s pivotal World Cup semifinal against Argentina.

Messi’s Impact on the Game

Messi currently shares the title of top scorer in the tournament with eight goals, tied with Kylian Mbappé. This match marks Messi’s first encounter with England in his storied career, taking place at Atlanta’s Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The winner will advance to face Spain in the final on Sunday in East Rutherford, New Jersey.

In his prematch press conference on Tuesday, Tuchel stated, “I was thinking about this, if we do a proper old school man-mark on Messi.” Although he is uncertain if they will employ this tactic, it remains a consideration as England prepares for this high-stakes matchup.

England’s Strategy and Challenges

Tuchel acknowledged Messi’s instinct for finding space on the field. “It’s just like the ball drops to him; he finds the gap, he makes himself the space for his left foot and then executes the solution on the very highest level,” he explained. With Messi having scored eight goals and provided two assists, he holds the record for the most goals in World Cup history, totaling 21.

Despite the significant pressure of facing the reigning champions, Tuchel emphasized that England has a clear aim. “We respect our opponent but we don’t dip into historic events and don’t make it bigger than it is,” he said, referring to the fierce rivalry between England and Argentina. “It is a big football match, a big occasion. We are very excited, grateful, hungry and ready to go.”

In terms of player availability, Tuchel noted that the team is mostly fit, apart from Jordan Henderson, who is sidelined with a broken arm, and Jarell Quansah, who is suspended. He expressed confidence in the team’s ability to manage the adrenaline and fatigue that comes with knockout football, sharing his thoughts on their intense journey to the semifinals.

Reflecting on the challenges faced, Tuchel remarked on the physically and emotionally draining sequence of matches. “It is kind of draining. We played in altitude, we played in the heat, we had to travel in between,” he said. “I love it so much that it gives me energy every day but if you analyse then the next opponent, you start analysing again because most of the time for us, it was only three days between the matches.”
