Steve Cherundolo Appointed U.S. U-23 Manager for 2028 Olympics

The U.S. Soccer Federation has appointed former international star and MLS Cup-winning coach Steve Cherundolo as the manager of the U.S. U-23 national team for the 2028 Summer Olympics.

Cherundolo, 47, is a seasoned veteran, having played in three World Cups and earning a spot in the U.S. Soccer Hall of Fame. He holds the record for the most appearances by an American player in Bundesliga history, with 415 games for Hannover 96. On the international stage, he has represented the USMNT 87 times.

His notable achievements include being part of the 2005 Concacaf Gold Cup-winning team.

“Representing the United States at the Olympic Games is one of the greatest honors in sports, and I’m grateful for this opportunity,” Cherundolo expressed. “We have an exciting group of players with tremendous potential. I look forward to fostering an environment that encourages growth and represents our country with pride. Our goal is to compete with courage, humility, and a clear identity that resonates with U.S. Soccer values.”

Cherundolo’s Coaching Experience

Following his playing career, which ended in 2014, Cherundolo transitioned into coaching. He began by working with youth teams at Hannover before serving as an assistant at VfB Stuttgart and the USMNT under interim manager Dave Sarachan. His first head coaching role came in 2021 with the Las Vegas Lights, a USL-Championship team.

Upon his successful tenure with the Lights, Cherundolo was promoted to manage LAFC’s first team, achieving immediate success. Under his leadership, the team won the Supporters Shield and MLS Cup in his debut season and captured a U.S. Open Cup title in 2024. He concluded his stint at LAFC with a record of 106 wins, 55 losses, and 32 draws.

“Steve Cherundolo has a proven track record as a winner, an elite talent developer, and a great ambassador for American soccer,” said U.S. Soccer Federation COO Dan Helfrich.

The upcoming 2028 Olympics will offer a crucial platform for developing the next generation of players. Cherundolo’s initial task will involve holding identification camps at the new U.S. Soccer National Training Center in Fayetteville, Georgia, as the nation automatically qualifies for the Olympics as the host country.

U.S. Soccer Vice President of Sporting Oguchi Onyewu remarked on Cherundolo’s unique understanding of both American and European styles of play. “His extensive coaching experience and background will be vital in harnessing players’ potential,” he said.
