Here’s the latest update from the ongoing FIFA World Cup as of 2026-06-30 23:59:00.
Lamine Yamal has expressed his eagerness to welcome Atlético Madrid forward Julián Álvarez at Barcelona next season. Yamal’s comments come amidst controversy, as Atlético’s CEO, Miguel Ángel Marín, accused Barcelona of showing “disrespect” in their pursuit of the Argentine star.
Álvarez recently confirmed his desire to leave Atlético, although he has not identified his preferred destination. ESPN sources indicate that Barcelona is a favored option, while Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal, and Real Madrid are also in the running. Real Madrid’s recent €150 million (£171m) bid was rejected earlier this month.
In an interview with Cadena SER, Yamal said, “I’m not thinking about it too much, but I’d love it, because [Álvarez] is a great player. If he comes, we’ll welcome him with open arms… If I were him, I’d do it. We’ll be waiting for him if he wants to come. [I say] go for it.”
At just 18 years of age, Yamal is currently with the Spanish national team at the FIFA World Cup 2026, traveling from Chattanooga to Los Angeles ahead of their round of 32 match against Austria.
Having recently recovered from an injury, Yamal’s integration into the squad has been gradual under coach Luis de la Fuente. Reflecting on his World Cup experience, he stated, “I’m learning… International football is different from club football. I’m gaining experience and figuring out how to handle the return from injury… Now I feel great and I’m really looking forward to Thursday.”
Spain started their campaign with a 0-0 draw against Cape Verde but bounced back with a 4-0 victory over Saudi Arabia and a 1-0 win against Uruguay, finishing as group winners.
“It’s true that everyone expected us to play better, but we faced different types of teams, none of them European,” Yamal noted. “They were tough matches, especially the third one. The game against Saudi Arabia was good, and the Cape Verde match was the opener.”
Yamal, who was part of Spain’s winning squad at Euro 2024, also shared his thoughts on standout players and teams: “[Lionel] Messi, obviously… I’m liking [Vinícius Júnior] and [Ismael] Saibari, too. I’ve enjoyed watching Morocco, Ivory Coast, and Japan, along with Argentina because of Messi… France have good players… I’ve liked Ecuador.”
