Julian Nagelsmann out as Germany boss, Jürgen Klopp lined up as replacement

Julian Nagelsmann has been relieved of his duties as head coach of the Germany national football team after their unexpected elimination from the FIFA World Cup 2026 at the hands of Paraguay in the round of 32. The team lost 4-3 on penalties, marking their third consecutive early exit from the tournament, following disappointing performances in 2018 and 2022.

In a statement, Bernd Neuendorf, president of the German Football Association (DFB), expressed gratitude towards Nagelsmann for his commitment and ambition since his appointment in September 2023. “The German Football Association expressly thanks Julian Nagelsmann for his work,” Neuendorf stated.

The DFB has begun discussions with Jürgen Klopp, who is being considered a strong candidate to take over as the national team manager. “Regarding the appointment of a new coach, the DFB leadership will seek talks with Jürgen Klopp, who has already shown a willingness to assume the role,” they confirmed.

Nagelsmann took over from Hansi Flick in 2023 and became the second-youngest coach in Germany’s history at the age of 36. He previously led the team to the quarterfinals in Euro 2024, extending his contract until Euro 2028 in January 2025.

Jürgen Klinsmann described Germany’s exit as “an embarrassment,” while Klopp, who has been out of management since leaving Liverpool in 2024, is currently serving as Red Bull’s Head of Soccer. He also took on an analyst role during the World Cup for Magenta TV.

Following Germany’s exit, Klopp commented, “It’s not the right moment to discuss my future. I have a job I truly enjoy, and right now, my focus is elsewhere.”
