England midfielder Bellingham slaps Argentina’s Barco on the head after World Cup semifinal exit

In an intense moment following England’s World Cup semifinal defeat, midfielder Jude Bellingham was seen slapping Argentina’s Valentín Barco on the back of the head during post-match celebrations in Atlanta.

Barco, who was an unused substitute, had excitedly entered the field to celebrate Enzo Fernández’s equaliser, gesturing enthusiastically as he ran along the 18-yard line. His exuberance caught the attention of England defender John Stones, who gave him a shove as celebration ensued.

After the match concluded, Bellingham approached Barco, who was celebrating with teammates, and appeared to slap the back of his head. This action led to a confrontation between the two players, which was quickly diffused.

As per International Football Association Board (IFAB) guidelines, “a player who, when not challenging for the ball, deliberately strikes an opponent or any other person on the head or face with the hand or arm, is guilty of violent conduct unless the force used was negligible.”

ESPN has reached out to FIFA for further comments regarding the incident. There is a possibility that Bellingham could face disciplinary action if the slap is classified as violent conduct.

If found guilty, the 23-year-old could be suspended for England’s upcoming bronze medal match against France in Miami.
