Dani Olmo rejects Roberto Ayala’s apology for World Cup final confrontation: ‘He is lying’

Dani Olmo has rejected an apology from Argentina’s assistant coach Roberto Ayala following their altercation after Spain’s recent World Cup final triumph.

Video footage captured Ayala forcefully placing his hands around Olmo’s neck, which led Ayala to apologize on Wednesday. He claimed his actions were a reaction to a comment made by Olmo.

Olmo responded firmly, stating, “Someone who claims to apologize but justifies an aggressive action is obviously not sincere. I didn’t speak to him, so there is no need for an apology.” He emphasized the importance of humility and integrity in sportsmanship.

“When my family and fans watch the game, I want them to feel proud of our performance as well as our conduct. As players, we have a responsibility to set a positive example for the younger generations,” he added.

During his apology on Valencia Capital Radio, Ayala disputed claims that he punched Olmo, clarifying, “It was more of a shove than a punch. It was a reaction to something he said, but we should put it behind us.” He expressed his intent to apologize in person if they meet.

Argentina has faced backlash for their behavior at the end of the match on July 19, particularly with members of their squad, including Leandro Paredes, confronting Spanish players. FIFA has initiated a disciplinary investigation into the incident.
