Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar don’t ‘need to prove anything to anyone’ – João Cancelo

João Cancelo, the Portuguese defender, has come to the defense of Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar, stating that they do not deserve the criticism aimed at them during the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Ronaldo, aged 41, faced scrutiny following a mediocre performance in Portugal’s opening match, which ended in a 1-1 draw against the Democratic Republic of Congo. Meanwhile, Neymar, 34, has not participated in Brazil’s first two matches due to a calf injury, leading some to question his selection for the tournament.

“I don’t think Neymar or Cristiano need to prove anything to anyone,” Cancelo remarked to reporters. “Their talent and accomplishments in football are well-established. The criticism is merely noise. Both Cristiano and Neymar are aware of their value to their nations.”

Ronaldo joins Lionel Messi as one of only two players to participate in a sixth World Cup. He remains the all-time leading scorer for the men’s national team, with 143 goals since his debut in 2003.

On the other hand, Neymar holds the record for Brazil’s all-time leading scorer, netting 79 goals in 128 appearances. He has been sidelined since suffering an ACL injury in October 2023.

Jack Hendry, defender for Scotland, has expressed confidence in facing Neymar if the Brazilian returns for their upcoming clash on Wednesday. Despite missing the initial two Group C matches, Neymar has been cleared to play by head coach Carlo Ancelotti.

Hendry recalled his previous experience against Neymar during his time with Club Brugge when they faced Paris Saint-Germain, which also featured Messi and Kylian Mbappé. “I’m quite comfortable coming up against Neymar and look forward to it,” he stated.

As he prepares for this significant encounter, Hendry emphasized the importance of focus while playing against elite players like Neymar, who can capitalize on any lapses in concentration.
