Christian Eriksen to rehab in Denmark after on-field collapse

VfL Wolfsburg has announced that Denmark international Christian Eriksen will begin an individual rehabilitation program in Denmark following another on-field incident last month. The club expressed their ongoing support for Eriksen, stating, “We remain in regular contact with Christian and the doctors overseeing his treatment. We continue to wish Christian all the very best with his rehabilitation.”

The 34-year-old midfielder collapsed during Denmark’s friendly match against Ukraine in Odense on June 7, clutching his chest. This incident brought back vivid memories of his cardiac arrest at the European Championship five years earlier, prompting teammates to form a protective circle while he received medical attention.

Fortunately, Eriksen managed to leave the field on his own and was subsequently hospitalized for further tests. Afterward, he provided an update, reassuring fans that he was “doing well” and had returned home to his family. “Receiving a shock from my ICD has had a major effect on both me and my family, but this was a different situation from what happened in 2021,” he explained.

Eriksen signed a two-year contract with Wolfsburg as a free agent in September last year, but unfortunately could not help the club avoid relegation from the Bundesliga. He served as captain in his last match for Wolfsburg, during the playoff defeat against Paderborn.

As he embarks on his rehabilitation journey, all eyes will be on Eriksen, particularly with the FIFA World Cup 2026 on the horizon. The football community continues to support him as he works towards recovery and a potential return to the pitch.
