Lionel Messi: Argentina’s World Cup win over England ‘a gift for Maradona’

Lionel Messi has dedicated Argentina’s World Cup semifinal victory over England to the late Diego Maradona. The defending champions staged a remarkable comeback to defeat England 2-1 on Wednesday in Atlanta, earning a place in the final against Spain on Sunday.

Messi, who played a pivotal role by assisting both goals, expressed his admiration for Maradona, stating, “Diego was truly great. I never wanted to compare myself to him; as far as I’m concerned, he’s the greatest of them all.”

Reflecting on their past interactions, Messi recalled, “We shared some wonderful moments; in 2010, at the World Cup, he had a brilliant spell. Today, wherever he is, he’ll be happy to see this, as the national team meant so much to him. It’s a gift for him.”

Maradona, who passed away in 2020, is famously remembered for his ‘Hand of God’ goal in the 1986 World Cup quarterfinal against England. He later scored another iconic goal that won a FIFA poll for the ‘goal of the century.’

Messi acknowledged the special significance of the match, fueled by the long-standing rivalry between the two nations. “Although it was just a match, we experienced something special,” he said. “The fans wanted this victory more than any other, and it means reaching another World Cup final.”

Expressing pride in bringing joy to the Argentine people, Messi continued, “No Argentine wanted to lose this match. It was incredible how this whole World Cup unfolded.” He also highlighted his team’s preparation, stating, “I just want to enjoy myself. This team always gives its all, and we’re in another World Cup final.”

Messi, who became the all-time top scorer at World Cups with 21 goals, will face familiar faces in the final against Spain, a team featuring eight players from his former club, Barcelona.
