Former Chelsea chairman Ken Bates dies aged 94

Ken Bates, the former chairman of Chelsea Football Club, has died at the age of 94, the club confirmed on Saturday. Bates’ leadership spanned from 1982 to 2003, a period marked by significant successes for Chelsea.

Under his stewardship, the club achieved promotion to the top tier of English football and secured major titles, including two FA Cups, a League Cup, a UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup, a UEFA Super Cup, and a Community Shield. His influence was pivotal in establishing Chelsea as a prominent club in European football.

Bates eventually sold his stake in Chelsea to Roman Abramovich and later acquired a stake in Leeds United. The club expressed its condolences, stating, “It is with great sadness that we share the news of the loss of Ken Bates.”

In their statement, Chelsea extended heartfelt sympathies to Bates’ wife, Suzannah, and his family and friends. They recognized his relentless determination and contributions, particularly during challenging times.

Born in west London, Bates had a career in football management before Chelsea, serving as chairman of Oldham and co-owner of Wigan Athletic. He purchased Chelsea for just £1 in 1982, rapidly transforming its fortunes and ensuring the club’s long-term home remained Stamford Bridge.

Bates was also involved in the Football League, and in 1997, he was appointed chairman of Wembley National Stadium as the FA embarked on plans to redevelop the iconic venue. He eventually resigned from these positions before moving on to Leeds United.

After selling Leeds in 2013, Bates retired to Monaco, where he passed away on Saturday morning, according to Chelsea’s official statement.
