Marseille’s Mason Greenwood could opt for Fenerbahce or Atlético Madrid – sources

Former Manchester United star Mason Greenwood, currently contracted with Marseille until 2029, is facing a crucial decision between Fenerbahce and Atlético Madrid. Sources familiar with the situation revealed to ESPN that Greenwood will make his choice in the next couple of days.

The 24-year-old forward reportedly prefers a return to Madrid, where he previously played for Getafe during the 2023-2024 season and enjoyed life in the Spanish capital. His potential move back to Atlético would also align him with a club that has shown keen interest in securing his talents.

If a transfer occurs, Manchester United would be entitled to receive 35% of the fee, a condition agreed upon during Greenwood’s move to Marseille in the summer of 2024. This stipulation reflects the ongoing impact of his career choices on his former club.

Fenerbahce has presented a deal worth €42 million ($48 million) plus additional bonuses to Marseille, which breaks down to €28 million ($32 million) for the Ligue 1 club and €14 million ($16 million) for United. In contrast, Atlético has offered €45 million ($51.3 million) with bonuses, totaling €29.3 million ($33.4 million) for Marseille and €15.7 million ($18 million) for United.

Both clubs have already agreed on personal terms with Greenwood, who would earn between €7 million and €8 million ($8 million to $9 million) net annually if he opts for Türkiye. If he chooses LaLiga, his salary would range between €5 million and €6 million ($5.7 million to $6.8 million).

While AS Roma expressed interest in signing Greenwood, they fell short of providing competitive terms. Additionally, there have been reports of tension during his time at Marseille, including issues with team attendance and interactions with the club’s sporting director, Medhi Benatia.

Greenwood’s performance this season saw him net 23 goals for Marseille, showcasing his continued value as a player, a fact that Marseille capitalized on when signing him for over €26 million ($29.6 million) in July 2024.
