Argentina coach Scaloni awaits tests to learn extent of Cristian Romero knee injury

Argentina’s head coach, Lionel Scaloni, announced on Monday that the full extent of Cristian “Cuti” Romero’s knee injury will not be known until after the team’s medical staff conducts tests.

Romero exited the match in the 57th minute due to what appeared to be a knee injury and was replaced by Nicolás Otamendi in Argentina’s 2-0 victory over Austria during World Cup Group J play.

Argentina secured their spot in the knockout round by winning their first two group matches, thanks in large part to Lionel Messi, who has scored all five of the team’s goals in this tournament, marking his sixth appearance in the FIFA World Cup 2026.

Scaloni confirmed that tests on Romero will take place between Tuesday and Wednesday. He expressed concern, stating, “We don’t know the extent of the issue. He had already been dealing with some problems.” The coach added, “Let’s hope it’s nothing serious. He is a vital player for us. Although any substitute will perform well, it’s always preferable to have the full squad available.”

The Tottenham defender initially injured his knee in mid-April, with club tests revealing damage to his knee ligament. As a result, he missed the last six matches of the Premier League season.

According to reports from Argentina, Romero experienced pain in the same knee during Monday’s match and will not participate in the upcoming game against Jordan to allow for recovery.
