How Messi and Argentina’s World Cup meals are helping Kansas City families

Here is the latest update from the 2026 FIFA World Cup as of 2026-07-03 15:10:00.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — As temperatures soar to 94 degrees, football fans from around the globe flock to the FIFA World Cup fan fest in downtown Kansas City. While many revel in the festivities, a dedicated group of volunteers is on the ground ensuring that families in need receive meals.

Reducing Food Waste

Pete’s Garden, a nonprofit in Kansas City, is combating food waste and food insecurity by distributing meals made from unused food collected at the FIFA Fan Fest, Arrowhead Stadium, and nearby team hotels.

Recently, the organization gathered meals from Lionel Messi and the Argentina team, who were staying at the Origin Hotel along the Kansas City riverfront. Tamara Weber, the founder and director of Pete’s Garden, revealed that the team donated food on five different days in June, starting on June 3 and culminating on June 24. A standout dish included an “Argentinian chicken dish.”

Weber expressed her excitement over the project’s success, stating, “We take all the food that’s not served at the stadium and team hotels, which gives us insight into what teams enjoy.” Her efforts to prepare for events like the World Cup began when Kansas City was chosen as a host city in 2022.

Impact on the Community

Inside the kitchen at Grace and Holy Trinity Cathedral Memorial Garden, a group of 13 volunteers packs dozens of containers filled with high-quality food like shrimp scampi and pasta. This initiative has the potential to serve thousands of families across Kansas City.

Weber, who grew up influenced by her father’s gardening practices, learned the importance of preventing food waste early on. Now, as a mother herself, she reflects on families struggling to put food on the table. Her daughter’s involvement in a social justice club sparked her interest in addressing food waste.

After watching a documentary that highlighted food waste issues, Weber felt urged to act. With limited opportunities for volunteering in food waste, she created Pete’s Garden, which kickstarted in 2020 and resumed operations in 2021 after the pandemic halted its progress.

Through partnerships with local sports teams, Pete’s Garden continues to thrive. John Martellaro, a volunteer, noted that the quality of food received from these teams is “outrageous” and nutrient-dense, which is essential for those in need.

Looking ahead, Weber aims to expand Pete’s Garden’s impact, not just in Kansas City but also in other cities. She hopes to create a toolkit that can help replicate this successful model.
