Uruguay legend Diego Forlán named national team interim coach

Diego Forlán has been appointed as the interim head coach of the Uruguay national football team, and he will also serve as the permanent coach for the Under-20 squad.

The Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) confirmed the news on social media with a video showcasing highlights of Forlán’s illustrious national team career. The video included the phrase, “Do you know how fast I’d go?” when asked if he was ready to coach La Celeste.

Change in Leadership

This appointment follows the departure of Marcelo Bielsa, who resigned after a disappointing performance in the 2026 World Cup. Under Bielsa, Uruguay was eliminated early in the group stage, managing only draws against Cape Verde and Saudi Arabia, before losing to Spain.

Bielsa’s contract expired, prompting his exit from the role.

Looking Ahead

Forlán will lead the senior team until at least March 2027, coinciding with the AUF’s presidential elections. During this time, he is set to manage Uruguay for six FIFA international friendly matches while the federation searches for a permanent head coach.

In addition, Forlán will guide the U20 team as they prepare for the 2027 South American Championship next summer. The squad aims to qualify for the U20 World Cup, which will be held in Azerbaijan and Uzbekistan.

This marks Forlán’s third managerial role at the professional level after previous tenures with Peñarol in 2020 and Atenas de San Carlos in 2021.

A legendary striker, the 47-year-old scored 36 goals in 112 appearances for Uruguay and secured the Golden Ball award as the top player at the 2010 World Cup, where he helped La Celeste reach the semifinals.

Forlán began his professional career with Peñarol before playing for clubs like Independiente, Manchester United, Villarreal, and Atlético Madrid.
