Lionel Scaloni unsure about Argentina future: We will see

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Argentina’s head coach Lionel Scaloni is contemplating his future as his contract is set to expire at the end of 2026. Following a 1-0 defeat to Spain in the FIFA World Cup final, Scaloni reflected on his journey and what lies ahead.

The deciding goal came from Ferran Torres in the second half of extra time, marking Spain’s second title in World Cup history. Scaloni, who previously guided Argentina to victory in the 2022 World Cup and the Copa América in 2021 and 2024, expressed uncertainty about his next steps.

After Sunday’s match, he stated, “I will speak with the president of the Argentina federation, but I have a rough idea of what I want to do. I plan to complete my contract and then evaluate my options.” He shared that the enormity of this achievement left him pondering his future. “Honestly, I need to think because replicating this success feels daunting. I am grateful to the president of AFA for this opportunity, as coaching Argentina is a dream position.” He emphasized that the entire team gave their utmost in the tournament.

Scaloni became visibly emotional during his news conference while reminiscing about his tenure with the national team. He began his role in 2018 as an interim manager for two friendlies, later securing a permanent position and leading Argentina to the 2022 World Cup championship before signing an extension that lasts until 2026.

He added, “This place is incredible. Moving forward, we need a reset and to form another formidable group, which is no easy task. It pains me.” Scaloni expressed his appreciation for the players and the country, stating, “I am thankful for this group; they have shown tremendous resilience.”

Despite their efforts, Scaloni’s squad seemed to tire as the tournament progressed, showcasing remarkable comebacks against Cape Verde, Egypt, and England in the knockout stages. The team, composed of aging players, featured eight starters who also played in the 2022 final. Even Lionel Messi, who didn’t register a shot until the 117th minute, couldn’t help salvage a victory against Spain, who dominated throughout the match.

Scaloni concluded, “None of us expected to find ourselves in this position. There’s a lot to consider moving forward.”
